I have something called Tweak-XP Pro. I got a demo version a few months ago. It has only 30 uses, but you don't need to open it very often. It does a lot of nifty stuff, including getting rid of the shortcut dealy.

I found the answer to this so I am sharing with the group.

If you open up "Icon Packager", Click on the "settings icon" (left side).  The second Item down on the list "Display Shortcut Overlay Icon" and uncheck it.

That's it...

you can also do it without IP, using regedit :-

1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
3. Delete the IsShortcut registry value.
4. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile
5. Delete the IsShortcut registry value.

and to remove the 'shortcut to..' prefix

1. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
2. Change the 'link' REG_BINARY to 00 00 00 00
3. Repeat for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

you may have to re-boot....and please be careful when fiddling with your registry
